The Marshall Project is seeking a talented full-stack developer to join the product team that makes our award-winning journalism possible. This job is remote-friendly; our headquarters are in New York City.

Who We Are

The Marshall Project is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to covering America’s criminal justice system. In 2016 and 2021, The Marshall Project was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. We have also been honored with the Goldsmith Prize, multiple National Magazine Awards, and for General Excellence from the Online Journalism Awards. We are not advocates — we follow the facts and we do not pander to any audience — but we have a declared mission: to create and sustain a sense of urgency about the criminal justice system. We do not generally cover breaking news, although we curate the reporting of other news outlets in our morning newsletter. Our work includes investigative and explanatory projects and shorter pieces aimed at highlighting stories that other news organizations miss, underestimate or misunderstand. To assure our work reaches a larger audience, we partner with other media outlets; we have worked with more than 200 newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and online sites.

We are an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity. We welcome qualified applicants of all races, ethnicities, physical abilities, genders and sexual orientations, including people who have been incarcerated or otherwise involved with the criminal justice system.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of semantic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience with a web framework such as Django, WordPress, or (ideally) Ruby on Rails
  • Familiarity with the command line and Git
  • Experience dealing with SQL databases
  • A commitment to building an inclusive and thoughtful workplace

Most importantly, you:

  • Are curious, thoughtful, and think critically
  • Excel at collaborating with people with a wide range of talents
  • Enjoy learning and teaching in equal measure
  • Have informed opinions on your craft, and a willingness to both take feedback and advocate for the integrity of your work
  • Are comfortable taking on ownership and responsibility

We'd be particularly delighted to hire someone who has:

  • Interest in the criminal justice system, including personal or family experience of incarceration
  • Experience developing, deploying or managing a production web service (Heroku, AWS, etc.)
  • Experience garnering insights from analytics systems
  • Experience with Sketch, Figma, or similar software
  • Good writing skills
  • Experience working in a newsroom

We do not expect every candidate to be equally skilled in all these areas, and this is not a complete list of all relevant qualifications applicants might bring to the job. Please tell us about your other assets not mentioned here that may be valuable to this role. Reaching talent across a range of backgrounds and experiences is deeply important to us. If you do not have the exact combination of skills listed here, but are still interested in this role and/or in The Marshall Project, we'd love to hear from you.

Research shows that underrepresented applicants tend to downplay their qualifications. What's more important to us than a number of years are the experiences you've had and the expertise you've developed. This is not an entry-level position, and we are looking for someone with practical and practiced skills. However, whether you have 4 years, or only 2 years of nontraditional working experience, if you think you'd be a good fit, please apply.

Some examples of what your work might look like:

  • Develop features for our local newsroom pages that better serve our local audiences.

  • Develop a model for recommending related stories to readers who have just finished a story on our site.

  • Come up with clever ways of improving the workflow we use to turn Google Docs drafts into beautiful story pages.

  • Figure out a way to make words obey the laws of physics.

  • Develop better workflows and technologies for sharing our graphics with partners.

  • Brainstorm ways to improve The Record, our encyclopedic resource of criminal justice journalism across the web, to better reach an audience of people who are new to the subject.

  • Develop a reusable slideshow component that our reporters can use to enhance their stories, making sure it works on every platform and device.

  • Collaborate with a designer to find the best way to render a heartbreaking feature story about restorative justice visually.

Who You’d Be Working With

  • Gabe Isman, our Director of Technology and your humble manager
  • Elan Ullendorff, our Director of Product and internet celebrity
  • Ana Mendez, our Product Manager and hot sauce critic
  • Bo-Won Keum, our Editorial Designer and bookmaker
  • Katie Park, Software Engineer and actual rock star (no, really)
  • Ryan Murphy, Software Engineer and actual red panda (ok, not actually)
