Brittany Hailer is a staff writer for The Marshall Project - Cleveland. She will report on local criminal justice stories and examine the persistent problems in Cleveland, Ohio. Hailer joined The Marshall Project after serving as the director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Nonprofit Journalism, a news outlet she co-founded in 2021. She won the best investigative journalism award in the 2022 Nonprofit News Awards for her reporting on jail deaths. She has also won several regional Golden Quill awards, including the 2023 award for best investigative journalism. Previously, Hailer was an assistant teaching professor of journalism at the University of Pittsburgh, and a writer and editor with the Pittsburgh Current. She holds degrees in creative writing from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and Chatham University.
